Pharrell is almost pulling a Beyoncé, but he is certainly pulling a Jay Z, as the “Happy” hitmaker has just announced his much anticipated new solo album will be hitting stores in a matter of weeks.
The secretive project, which we now know is titled ‘G I R L,’ will be hitting stores and digital retailers on March 3 via Back Lot Music/Columbia Records. His first project since 2006′s In My Mind, features 10 tracks, lead by his Oscar nominated No. 1 single “Happy.”
The first news of the news album came late last year during his cover interview with Complex magazine, where all he would say is that he would not be rapping on this LP. “No rapping,” he told Complex. “It’s focused. Like I told you, that’s the difference between 30 and 40. ’Cause I was 30, now I’m 40 — and I’m not rapping.”
Early Wednesday morning, Pharrell revealed the cover art and posted a 30-second trailer of him in the studio, laughing, crying, and recording with composer Hans Zimmer and an orchestra.
On the eve of his album release, he will perform at the Academy Awards. He will also tour with Bruno Mars on select dates this spring/summer and play Coachella in April.
