President Barack Obama was very vocal when President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda in February 2014, signed a bill into law imposing harsh conditions on homosexual acts.
Obama called it a “step backwards”.
Museveni later responded with a statement that he is continuing with the
law, but hopes it won’t affect the relationship with both continues.
Unfortunately it has.
The United States has cut aid to Uganda, and cancelled sponsored military exercise. According to Aljazeera,
a White House statement on Thursday said the move was intended to
“reinforce” support for human rights for Ugandans regardless of sexual
orientation
It is now being reported that western
donors including the US had halted or re-directed about $118 million in
aid to Uganda before the announcement on Thursday.
Money allocated for projects in the east
African country, will be reallocated to other African countries. The US
would also impose visa restrictions on Ugandans it believes have been
involved in the violation of human rights. As you also know, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan also signed into law a bill sentencing any man or woman caught in any homosexual act to 14 years in jail.
Could our country be next? Will the Federal Government bend the laws to continue to get aid?
